Affogato: My new obsession is espresso over ice cream. You must try it!

affogato Affogato is an Italian miracle, as far as food experiences go!  One strong shot of hot espresso is poured over rock cold vanilla bean ice cream in a glass. Each bite is different and must be savored for the full experience. This treat is meant to be enjoyed in the moment, and is the best pick-me-up I know!

espresso and ice creamIt starts the moment the hot espresso is poured over the ice cream.  The first bite is a shocking mouthful of two opposites exploding at the same time. The hot, bitter espresso and the cold creamy ice cream do not blend at this point. The taste buds are awakened all at the same time. Your mind will say WTF!

    Affogato
The next bite is the start of the blending of flavors and temperatures evolving. The espresso cools a bit, and the ice cream melts slightly.  You can see the swirls of dark brown espresso against the creamy vanilla ice cream.  Using a combination of a spoon to eat the ice cream, and sipping the creamy espresso coffee, the Affogato will last about 5 bites.

The best bite will be the one at the end. The espresso will be perfectly blended with the melted ice cream and turns into the best gulp of espresso creme you will ever have. The whole experience is over in 3 minutes. Set the glass down and say a prayer of gratitude for the small pleasures in life. That is the point the caffeine and sugar kick in. Now go forth and get something done on your to-do list.

A couple of tips: serve the Affogato in a glass that is drinkable versus a bowl. Any ice cream or gelato will work that suits your fancy. My favorite is my homemade Vanilla Bean Gelato.  My niece love Chocolate Chip Mint Affogato. My husband likes two scoops of ice cream but that is just him. Keep your ice cream rock hard for the best experience. Colder ice cream will take a little longer to melt. Serve Affogato immediately. You can even let your guests pour the espresso themselves.

I have a High End SUPERAUTOMATIC Espresso machine a Saeco Xelsis, I make my own Keto Vanilla Ice cream, that tastes way better than any/all store bought Ice cream as it has high quality, real food in it, and it is healthy, As it doesn't have the toxins store bought ice-cream has. I also make a Coffee drink with an Espresso Shot with the same ingredients as my home made Vanilla bean ice-cream for Coffee Drink. Both taste Excellent!!

Gary, that sounds amazing! I'd love to try that espresso machine someday. Homemade ice cream/gelato is so much better than store bought. Ciao!!

Go for the Gelato, there's a huge difference in taste compared to ice cream.
